This year’s spring magazine cover story feature is of Astum Api Niikinaahk (Astum Api). Astum Api Niikinaahk translates to ‘come and sit at our home’ in Michif, a Métis language.

Astum Api is Winnipeg’s tiny home project housing individuals who are transitioning out of homelessness. There are 22 fully furnished units that face inwards looking onto a courtyard.

Jason Bell, who is featured on the cover and a tenant at Astum Api, cooks meals for all the individuals residing at Astum Api three times per week. Cooking for the community is a way for Bell to get to know the people better and is a creative outlet for him. Bell studied culinary arts in Brandon and helped his cousin run a food truck along the Sioux Pow Wow trail in Southern Manitoba.
