Kal Barteski and gmb chomichuk produced Secret Masquerade an amazing art show event last friday. All sorts of crazy stuff was happening around, performers, animals, music, dancers. (You can see all the pics tagged with the hashtag over on Kal’s Blog here.) Then at 10 pm the artist themselves created art in front of everyone. The artists performing the creation of their art live, really played into the experiential aspect of photography that a few of us had read about days before, over here. (This interview demands its own blog post but for now please read Photographs Are No Longer Things, They’re Experiences )
I ended up being fascinated by the sight of all these phones held aloft, the common sight now at events. These digital periscopes allowing people to capture and share their experiences, in fear of not being able to provide the validity of the moment. It almost felt criminal to have a smart phone in your pocket and NOT document and share the event as it unfolded.
It reminded me of my time at MoMA and how people’s relationship with art and how they experience it has changed so much. I didn’t shoot as much as I should have but the rest of my pics are here.
All in all a wonderful night designed by two of the most creative people I know.
