Recently I shot some figure studies in the studio. I was inspired by the up coming show at the WAG, Olympus: The Greco-Roman Collections of Berlin and wanted to try and capture some of the same sculptural qualities of figure in a photograph. As well I was inspired by the annual ESPN magazine body issue where they celebrate the athlete’s condition without revealing anything.
The study of the nude in art traces back as far as 30,000 BC. and has been a part of the photographic tradition since the birth of the medium. It’s perhaps the most challenging type of image to create as sometimes all it takes is a subtle change to take the image in the wrong direction.
The model had just finished competition and was at her peak form and was incredibly gracious for my shoot. In the future I’d love to try and do more of these kinds of shoots with a wide range of body types.
